Information Security and Digital Safety
A Simple and Practical Guide to Staying Safe in the Digital World
Digital technology has become an essential part of everyday life. We use smartphones, computers, the Internet, online banking, digital payments and social media almost every day. While technology has made life easier and more convenient, it has also created new risks such as phishing, malware, ransomware, identity theft, online fraud, data breaches, social engineering and AI-enabled scams.
Information Security and Digital Safety presents these subjects in simple, clear and practical language. The book is not intended to be a highly technical textbook for cybersecurity specialists. Instead, it provides a broad understanding of information security and practical precautions that can be useful to ordinary users as well as people working in organisations.
The book covers the fundamentals of Information Security and gradually takes the reader through passwords and account security, phishing and social engineering, smartphone and Internet safety, protection of personal information, banking and ATM security, debit and credit card safety, online banking and digital payments. It also discusses malware, ransomware, cyberattacks, Artificial Intelligence and its emerging security risks, including deepfakes, voice cloning and AI-enabled fraud.
The later chapters introduce readers to organisational Information Security, Network Security, Data Centre Security, Security Operations Centres, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, and Information Systems Audit. Practical checklists, a sample Information Security Policy, a glossary and a quick-reference guide are also included.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The Author's Experience Behind the Book
This book is also the result of the author's long professional association with banking, information technology and information security.
During a career spanning 37 years in a nationalised bank, S. V. Sai Baba worked through a period of remarkable technological transformation in banking—from traditional manual systems to computerisation, Core Banking, digital services and modern information-security practices.
His professional experience included work relating to branch computerisation, Core Banking, Information Technology and Information Security. He also had direct responsibility for information security and was involved in practical initiatives relating to the protection of banking systems and networks.
This practical experience has influenced the approach adopted in the book. Rather than presenting Information Security merely as a collection of technical terms, the book attempts to explain why security matters, how risks arise, how people can protect themselves, and how organisations can establish appropriate security controls.
The book therefore combines professional experience, practical understanding and a commitment to knowledge sharing.
A Personal Note
“I have always believed that knowledge becomes more valuable when it is shared. My purpose in writing this book is not to make readers cybersecurity experts, but to help them understand the digital world around them, recognise common risks and develop simple habits that can make their digital lives safer.”
Technology will continue to change, and new forms of cyber threats will continue to emerge. No single book can provide a permanent solution to every security challenge. However, awareness, responsible behaviour and continuous learning can provide a strong foundation for staying safe in the digital world.
